The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) has conducted an in-depth study to explore how cutting-edge technology is reshaping the home improvement industry. As technology advances, its influence extends into every sector, including home improvement, where professionals are increasingly adopting innovative tools to enhance their operations. This comprehensive study sheds light on the current state of technology adoption among home improvement professionals, revealing significant insights and trends.

In this study, HIRI examines a variety of technologies that are revolutionizing the way home improvement professionals work. These technologies include:

  • Mobile Apps for On-Site Work: Streamlining tasks and communication on the go.
  • Scheduling and Time-Tracking Tools: Improving efficiency and project management.
  • Estimating and Bidding Software: Enhancing accuracy and competitiveness in project proposals.
  • Accounting and Invoicing Software: Simplifying financial management and transactions.
  • Project Management Software: Facilitating comprehensive oversight and collaboration.
  • Customer Relationship Management Systems: Strengthening client interactions and satisfaction.
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM): Improving design and construction processes through detailed digital representations.
  • Tools Leveraging Artificial Intelligence: Automating tasks and providing advanced data analysis.
  • Drones or Aerial Imaging: Offering new perspectives and precision in site assessments.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): Enabling immersive project visualization and planning.

Objectives

Evaluate the current state and trends in technology adoption among professional contractors, focusing on sectoral differences and growth trajectories.
Examine the motivations, benefits, and barriers influencing contractors’ decisions to adopt or delay technology integration.
Identify preferred discovery methods, training resources, and vendor support systems that drive or hinder technology adoption.
Understand future intentions for technology adoption, including planned investments, emerging tools, and the role of organizational size in adoption strategies.

As the home improvement industry continues to evolve, staying ahead of technological advancements will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness and efficiency. The study highlights the importance of vendor support, effective training resources, and the need for tailored approaches based on organizational size and sector-specific requirements.
